The most important task for the Comps Committee is to evaluate Comprehensive Exam essays. For Option 1, the Comps Committee evaluates the two sit-down exam essays. For Option 2, the Comps Committee evaluates the Department Piece.

For both Option 1 essays and Option 2 Department Pieces, the evaluation protocol is this:
  • The comps documents are read by three Comps Committee members. Documents are evaluated using the Department rubrics for Option 1 and Option 2. Option 1 essays are anonymous. Option 2 papers are identified.
  • The possible evaluations are
    • Accept
    • Revise and resubmit: minor revisions
    • Revise and resubmit: major revisions
    • Reject

  • The evaluations of the three Comps Committee reviewers are compiled by the chair of the Comps Committee.
  • The Comps Committee meets to discuss all evaluations, including conscientious deliberation of cases in which there is discrepancy among evaluations.
  • The Comps Committee deliberates until consensus is reached regarding all evaluations.
  • Members of the Comps Committee provide to the chair of the Comps Committee substantive comments about each Department Piece and exam essay.
  • The chair of the Comps Committee compiles the substantive comments into an evaluation letter for each student.
  • The letter is sent to the student and to the student's advisor.

In cases when the evaluation is Revise and Resubmit, a member of the Comps Committee is designated to work with the student through revisions. The revision protocol is this:
  • Option 1 essays: The student may meet with the designated faculty person only once in order to clarify the expectations for revision that were set out in the evaluation letter. The student then submits a revised essay. Depending on the extent of required revisions, the revised piece may be returned to the original three reviewers, or the faculty representative may make the judgment that the piece has been sufficiently revised. Students must complete revisions by the end of the semester in which they take comps.
  • Option 2 Department Piece: The designated faculty person works with the student through revisions until the piece reaches a Pass level. Depending on the extent of required revisions, the revised piece may be returned to the original three reviewers, or the faculty representative may make the judgment that the piece has been sufficiently revised. Students have one year to complete revisions.

In addition to these evaluation responsibilities, the Comps Committee has several other tasks:
  • write and select the Option 1 exam questions
  • manage the administration of the Prelim Exam
  • communicate with students and advisors about Comps policies and procedures
  • coordinate policies and procedures with the TE Department Doctoral Education Committee
  • maintain an ANGEL site with Comps info.
  • maintain and update this wiki
